Photo Essay: Rise of the Jack o' Lanterns

Five days into October, I already have both my Halloween costumes all set (though only one party booked), and have visited two Halloween attractions.

My second stop of the year, "The Rise" has taken over Descanso Gardens with an invasion of jack o'lanterns that have been carved, painted, and stacked into a variety of spooky and whimsical characters and creatures.

There are skeletons with pumpkin body segments...

Dinosaurs...

Video game heroes...

The solar system...

Horror movie posters...

Great works of art...

Humpty Dumpty...

The Terminator...

Tim Burton...

Space Invaders and Keith Haring figures...

...and Dorothy and the gang on the way to Emerald City.

In addition to a larger-than-life Chinese calendar...

...there are also sugar skulls galore...

...in an impressive display devoted to Dia de los Muertos...

...one of the most spooktacular sections of the attraction...

...without references to Hollywood or pop culture icons.

Rounding out the path of pumpkins through the rose garden...

...is a tribute to those celebrities we lost to the other side this year...

...not the least of whom were Egon from Ghostbusters and Alice from The Brady Bunch.

I only wished I had the chance to visit without the crowds clamoring for photos taken with the flash on, pushing strollers and carrying toddlers on shoulders – or with someone to help me drown them all out. With concessions serving beer and wine and snacks, and all the colored lights under a clear, black sky, it would've made a lovely, romantic date night, walking hand-in-hand or arm-in-arm along the dimly lit pathways.
